The one that’s been concretely proven to work is lutein.

Lutein is a pigment found in high concentrations in a layer of the retina where pigment-packed cells help shield against excess light.

Research by trusted academic research institutions shows that lutein supplementation aids this process in our eyes to improve vision naturally.

Fortunately, lutein, and the other vitamins and minerals mentioned, occurs naturally in foods you’re probably already eating!

Here are a few key foods to include in your next meal:

  • Leafy green vegetables like spinach, kale, and collards
  • Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish
  • Eggs, nuts, beans, and other nonmeat protein sources
  • Oysters

2. Manage Chronic Conditions

Some chronic conditions may impact a person’s vision.

Common conditions that can cause eyesight problems include:

  • Diabetes
    • Diabetes can lead to an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy.

    • Diabetic retinopathy causes the tiny arteries in your retina to leak blood and fluid into the eye, harming your vision.
    • Adopting regular exercise and a diabetes-friendly diet can help manage the condition and avoid related vision problems.
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • High blood pressure increases a person’s risk of stroke and heart disease.
    • High blood pressure can cause hypertensive retinopathy, which is blood vessel damage that can lead to blurry vision and even blindness.

Other chronic conditions that can affect your sight include high cholesterol, asthma, cancer, and depression.

It’s important to contact your optometrist if you notice any changes to your vision, especially if you have one of the chronic conditions linked to eye problems.

3. Wear Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses prevents age-related eye disease.

Protection from UV rays reduces the risk for age-related macular degeneration.

 

The right pair of shades will help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose a pair that blocks 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. However, it’s still a good idea to wear proper eye protection for an extra layer.

It may seem like a brainer, but the little things help, especially in the long run.

4. Quit smoking

Smoking leads to future eye diseases.

Smoking dramatically raises your risk of developing blindness, cataracts and glaucoma.

Fortunately, even in the first few hours of quitting smoking, your eyes, lungs, heart, and other body organs can begin to heal from years of tobacco-induced harm.

And the longer you can go without smoking, the better your blood vessels will be, and inflammation in your eyes and throughout your body will decrease.

5. Maintain proper hygiene

Ensure your hands are clean before touching your eyes or contact lenses.

 

Germs and diseases pose an extreme risk to your eyes.

Even little items that irritate your eyes (like dust) might cause visual problems.

As a result, before touching your eyes or handling your contact lenses, you must always wash your hands.

6. Visit Your Optometrist Regularly

Regular eye check-ups are an important part of eye care.
